Character: Playful * Carefree Samantha was born of unknown parentage and left at an orphanage not far from the Blasting Moors at a young age. She grew up there among the other Ketucari living a relatively care-free life. She was taken care of by the caretakers of the orphanage, who had become parental-figures to her, despite being from an entirely different species. She learned to love them. Her brothers and sisters were the other Ketucari. Some were younger, others older. None looked the same, but all were family. Samantha would spend her time with her brothers and sisters playing in the Blasting Moors. They discovered all kinds of games: “chicken” involved standing next to a geyser the longest before it erupted, “hide and speak” involved a seeker standing next to a geyser and the other players hiding. When the geyser erupted, all hidden players would yell out and then the seeker would have to find them using his or her memory of the yells while the geyser was shooting off right next to him. Samantha’s favourite, however, was “floatball.” It saw the participants split in teams and place a large tumbleweed over a geyser. They would wait for it to shoot up, and then the teams would try to get the tumbleweed in the other team’s goal without allowing it to hit the ground. Although these games all involved some degree of lethal danger and Samantha had witnessed several of her siblings getting grievously injured – and once, killed – during their play, she never worried for her life. Indeed, Samantha did not fear much at all. She always won chicken and was the first at the ball when playing floatball, often while it was still searing hot. Through some amazing fortune, she never got injured badly. Her caretakers always claimed she was blessed by some god or another, but Samantha was never too concerned about the source of her luck; she preferred playing to thinking. The one thing Samantha feared was hearing bed-time stories of great Ketucari of days’ past, doing great deeds and saving their families, their nations or perhaps even the world. Although some part of her knew these were just legends and fairytales written for younglings, she still feared that she would never reach such greatness. One night, she resolved to never die until she made some sort of great impact on the world, or at least her loved ones. Since then she hasn’t feared bed-time stories.
